New Zealand - Dunedin, Christchurch and Kaikoura

From Queenstown my first plan was to head to Invercargill to dive with the great white sharks. This was something I was looking forward to for a long time, until I received bad news... The day before heading to Invercargill I got a message from that the weather conditions were really bad so sadly this activity didn’t happen.

As there is not so much to do in Invercargill I changed my plans. I canceled my hostel there and I changed my bus to Dunedin. I stayed here for two nights and there were some fun things to do. From the center of Dunedin there is a bus going to Harington Point on the Otago peninsula and from here I walked about 40 minutes to reach my final destination for this evening. Here you will find the Royal Albatross Centre where you can learn a lot about this interesting bird. There are a lot of them flying around and there pretty big. There are also a lot fur seals in this area.

Besides the albatrosses and fur seals there also was the opportunity to join a blue penguin tour. This is the smallest penguin species in the world and I really would recommend dong this tour if you are in Dunedin. First you get some information about these cute creatures and then it is time to go outside. You will wait on a platform until the penguins come on shore. The good thing about this tour is the fact that the humans are locked on the platform and the penguins have their space to walk around and observe us if they want to. It is so funny to see them walking to their nests and when the last penguin reached their nest we were allowed to leave the platform and go home.

The next day I walked around the city for a bit and after my last night it was time to move on to my next destination, Christchurch. This city is one of my favorites in New Zealand. There are a lot of restaurants and bars. Also this is a good place to go to Kaikoura, famous for it’s dolphins and whales. I booked a whale watching tour but sadly due the bad weather conditions this tour also didn’t go through. There still was another option, swimming with the dolphins, but just before the start of this tour they decided that the weather for this tour also was to bad. This all was really sad but the area on it’s own is very nice to walk. From the shore there are a lot of Dolphins and fur seals to see so it still was worth it to go.

The next day was my last full day in New Zealand. I walked around with some people I met and we had a nice dinner. New Zealand was an amazing experience and I would recommend everyone to go there. The variety is amazing and there are so many different things to do. I had one last flight from Queenstown to Auckland before heading to San Francisco.
